I know Terry, calm down....lol

Here's what I have been feeling lately. At first, I was obsessed with this new reincarnation of pop music. But then, everybody jumped on the bandwagon, and I feel like it's cheapened the genre. I don't know...

It all started with Dannii Minogue's Neon Nights, and then Holly Valance's State of Mind and then Annie's Anniemal. Slowly, it came forth to the mainstream, and everyone is doing it now! Rachel Stevens, PAY TV, Lasgo, Infernal, Juliet, September, Tina Cousins, etc. As much as I love them, I can't help but feel that they are just killing it!

And then we have the cheapening of the genre. I feel like people started doing electropop just because they thought it was cool, like Kelly Osbourne, Bananarama, Sara Jorge, Akcent, etc. I like the songs, but I just feel like they have cheapened the quality of electropop.

Anyway, I don't quite know how I feel about this, but I needed to get these very disturbing feelings out. lol

Any thoughts?

The only good electro out there now that I like is Goldfrapp. And they're not even electro, they're alternative.

I was referring specifically to electropop. Goldfrapp walks the thin line between electro and electropop...

lol I know, that's what I was saying. The only thing related to electropop, even marginally, that I like is Goldfrapp.

First, Dannii and Annie are mostly electro when artists like Bananarama or Rachel Stevens have some electro beats in regular pop, rnb or dance songs. I love that mixed feeling in a song. However, too much electronic sound in a tune kill it for me (IE Annie, Goldfrapp etc Sorry Terry! lol).

Besides, I don't see the problem in electropop going mainstream. Especially if it can save us from the hiphop and rock era!

I can understand how you feel though. I like it when I listen to music that most people has never heard about (Sugababes, Rachel or Girls Aloud are totally unknown in my country)... it makes it more personnal.

To sum up, I've nothing against the electropop democratization! :nerd:

I love that other artists are jumping on the bandwagon, the more the merrior I say! I won't let that let stop me from liking electro music.

Okay people, who gave my thread one star??? pshhhhh lol

I guess what I was trying to say was that there's nothing special about electropop when everyone is doing it. I still like it, but it's like "yeah okay, what else is new?" I'm actually kind of sad about it, cause I was one of the electropop pioneers. Right Terry? lol ;)

I see that everyone doing it as a good thing, it means they like it, and maybe one day it will go mainstream here in America, and finally wipe away all the horrid rap on the charts.

but I can see what you mean...people who make electro songs aren't making them with the WOW appeal anymore, its just all same-y, is that what you meant?

Yeah, that's what I mean! I kind of didn't wanna tell you how I felt so my feelings wouldn't rub off on you. lol

I used to get worried that pop was dead, and was slowly being murdered by R&B and stuff like that, but I don't think there's anything to worry about with that. Similarly, there's nothing to worry about with Electro-pop cheapening or diluting otherwise pop artists away from the genre.

While some people do sell out completely, pop music usually goes in cycles where it's really popular (1998 - Britney, BSB, N*Sync etc), then on a downhill slide to where rock and R&B seem to be everywhere. I think with things being quite electro now, we're looking at what is hopefully the beginning of the cycle. Hopefully our AOB can do something really edgy and revolutionary and ride that wave when it comes!

That's thing thing, Joel. The reason I realized there was something I didn't quite like about electropop was this:

A few months ago, I said it would be awesome if Ace of Base's new sound was electropop. It wouldn't be too far of a stretch for them, and it would give them a 'coolness' factor, as well as some success.

But now, I'm thinking "Oh dear, I hope they don't do electropop." Why? Because everyone else has done it already! And really, it would just be jumping on the bandwagon. Really, after Bananarama attempt a comeback by riding that bandwagon...well...it'd be sad for Ace of Base to try it afterward.

Anyway, the sad thing is I still love me some electropop. I was listening to my own electropop CDRs yesterday and today, and I enjoyed it no less than I used to. But I do feel it's now a mainstream genre, and I guess that's what's annoying me...

I know what you mean... I don't know if it was the same conversation I had with you, but I've said it a few times... unfortunatley in the time AOB take to write new stuff, record, produce and release a new album, man could have colonised the red planet. Musical crazes come and go, and AOB are left looking badly outdated. First time I heard AOB use a vocoder on Jenny's voice was 5 years after it went out of fashion... I don't think it'd be a problem if they did something like electropop, but they need to give it a new angle.

I think Madonna's done it brilliantly with her new album, but like everything else, it will have a shelf life. Goldfrapp take a great angle on it, but it's seeming like it's almost been done. Things will start to ebb towards pure pop sooner or later, it'll just take someone to have all the ingredients and to do it well. I say enjoy it while it's here, because if it weren't for electropop, I think everyone would be trying their hand at frigging R&B.
